Expanding the College Track for Access and Success
McGlynn, Angela Provitera
Education Digest: Essential Readings Condensed for Quick Review, v74 n5 p51-54 Jan 2009
As has been said by many educators, the challenge of educating the historically underserved--minority students, low-income students, and students who are the first in their families to attend college--must be met. Apart from the moral imperative, there is the need to raise the education and skill levels of all people to assure a reasonable national standard of living in a competitive global economy. If leaders miss this challenge--and it certainly is a challenge, given social and demographic realities--their nation faces perils difficult to fathom in their enormity. This article is about ongoing initiatives aimed at attracting the underserved prior to their entering college to better prepare them for college and for academic success once they are admitted.
