Regardless of whether one's school is undergoing a major renovation or hasn't been touched since it was originally built decades ago, there are still ways to initiate change in one's school and community in a meaningful way--and that's exactly what two principals from southern Pennsylvania did. Last summer, in an effort to raise awareness for alternative fuels, two high school principals walked 216 miles from southern Pennsylvania to Washington, DC. Upon reaching their destination, the duo was received by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, with whom they discussed the government's role in promoting environmental awareness in schools. To reach more school leaders, Principal Lewis Kindja and Assistant Principal Aaron Steinly of United High School in Armagh, Pennsylvania, have created a nonprofit organization called Principals for Change (PFC). The goal of PFC is to challenge principals to work with teachers to effectively address environmental issues across the curriculum--and to provide grants to teachers for designing and implementing green projects in their schools and communities. One of the group's initiatives--Green Spaces--is a social networking site designed specifically for schools to share their green projects and initiatives with other participating schools. Also, in January, PFC will launch the Green School Challenge--a semester-long initiative to track schools' progress in taking steps to promote environmental awareness.
