Assessing Principal Internships and Habits of Mind: The Use of Journey Mapping to Enhance Reflection
Cooner, Donna; Dickmann, Ellyn
Innovate: Journal of Online Education, v2 n4 Apr-May 2006
One way for principal interns to reflect on their own learning during the internship experience is through the use of written journals, which can also provide their supervisors with valuable information regarding the interns' professional growth as well as the effectiveness of the internship program itself. However, the organization and assessment of such journals is difficult. Supervisors may not detect significant patterns of professional development without extensive analysis and examination of journal entries; moreover, access to such journals remains limited in the traditional pen-and-paper format. In response to these constraints, Donna Cooner and Ellen Dickmann advocate a structured form of online e-journaling as an ideal vehicle for assessing professional development in principal internship programs. In turn, they give particular attention to an Internet tool called Journey Mapping that allows e-journal writers to create narratives of their learning process while also soliciting targeted forms of quantitative and qualitative information for structured evaluation by program supervisors.
