It is certainly no secret that people are living in a difficult economic climate. In these times of belt-tightening, both institutional and personal, budgets for arts education are being slashed and individual donations are plummeting. Music teachers in particular know well the impact of these developments on their programs, and they know that travel budgets and fundraising efforts for their performing groups are often heavily affected. So how does one manage to plan--and pay for--travel with a performing group these days? The author has spoken with several music directors who, at the time of this writing, were planning to bring groups to MENC's Music Education Week in Washington, DC, in June of 2009, as well as a tour planner who helps teachers to reach their travel goals for their groups. This article presents the suggestions they offered.
