Equity in Dance Education Where Are We Now?
Risner, Doug
Journal of Dance Education, v6 n4 p105-108 2006
As issues of equity consistently surface as a fundamental concern for dance education's past, present, and future, this commentary is the first of a number of pieces that will focus on root common goals, new ways of seeing the field, and acting upon both of these realizations in one's own site. In this initial commentary, the author discusses equity in terms of "where dance education is now" and what dance educators' situation requires of all dance education populations and areas of service that NDEO enthusiastically represents. In considering dance education broadly, the author discusses the specific terms of equity namely, gender equity, curricular equity, social equity, and equity across arts professions. Each of these specificities is critical for understanding the status of dance education and what educators need to do.
