My Bluford High Boys: How a Book Club for Reluctant Readers Proved the Naysayers Wrong
Stevenson, Sara
School Library Journal, v55 n5 p34-36 May 2009
As a middle school librarian in Austin, Texas, the author has been running weekly book clubs for years, which covered many genres that appeal to a wide cross section of kids. When approached by a group of Latino boys from low-income families, the author was inspired to run a Bluford High book club for reluctant readers. The author shares how she connects with reluctant readers so they would feel comfortable discussing issues in a book club and describes how the club helps improve the Bluford boys' reading fluency.
