Attitudes of Prospective Primary School Teachers toward Gender Equity
Aksu, Mualla Bilgin
International Journal of Educational Reform, v14 n4 p370-375 Fall 2005
This study was designed to determine attitudes of prospective primary school teachers toward gender equity. The specific objectives were: (1) to find out their attitudes toward gender equity, that is, whether they were positive or negative; and (2) to compare the attitudes in terms of the following independent variables: gender, age, grade, type of class, family location, mother's education, father's education, father's job, family income, reading habit, and willingness to enter the teaching profession. This study is based on descriptive survey research. The target population was the prospective primary school teachers who were attending the faculty of education in the University of Inonu, Malatya, a province located in the eastern part of Anatolia; the samples consisted of freshmen and seniors at the faculty. The responding sample was positive toward gender equity; however, the findings of this study may be generalized only on the sample population, not all prospective teachers in Turkey. That is why further research needs to consider veteran teachers and prospective teachers in different teaching fields and why the size of the sample should be increased. (Contains 1 table.)
