Supporting a Holistic Adult Literacy Program: The Provision of a Clinical Social Worker
McDonald, Lex; Jones, Elizabeth
Adult Basic Education and Literacy Journal, v3 n2 p77-86 Sum 2009
This study investigates the provision of a clinical social worker (CSW) in an adult literacy agency and focuses upon the impact on the learners, tutors, and organization. We conducted interviews with agency personnel, the CSW, a sample of learners, and a funding representative. Then we undertook inductive thematic analysis of the data. The results support the efficacy of a CSW who has the skills, personal qualities, and professional orientation required to meet the needs of learners and to accommodate the organization's philosophy. The provision of the CSW enabled learners to focus more effectively on their learning, tutors to focus on literacy instruction, and the organization to develop a holistic approach to learner needs.
