United States: Exploring the Marriage Debate
Carter, Julie H.
Journal of Gay & Lesbian Issues in Education, v2 n2 p117-119 2004
As citizens of the United States respond to legislative and judicial actions that have challenged the prohibition against same-sex couples receiving marriage licenses, schools have a timely opportunity to engage students on this most important debate. Educators can help their students understand the full significance of this issue by encouraging them to examine their opinions about the same-sex marriage debate and about the institution of marriage. The Gay Lesbian Straight Educators Network (GLSEN) has released a valuable resource to accomplish this task. "At Issue: Marriage, Exploring the Debate over Marriage Rights for Same-Sex Couples" (2003) allows students to explore this very complicated issue, to evaluate how this affects all people, and to understand the reasons for the ensuing national debate. It is an impressive and critical work of curriculum that helps high school students and social studies teachers unpack the social and political implications of current opposition to civil marriage. The curriculum is organized into six distinct but related lesson plans, each of which allows high school students to apply analysis and synthesis skills. This valuable resource is available free for high school social studies/civics teachers eager to use real life events as a backdrop for encouraging critical thinking on complicated cultural issues.
