No Strings Attached: Open Source Solutions
Fredricks, Kathy
School Library Media Activities Monthly, v25 n10 p42-43 Jun 2009
Imagine downloading a new software application and not having to worry about licensing, finding dollars in the budget, or incurring additional maintenance costs. Imagine finding a Web design tool in the public domain--free for use. Imagine major universities that provide online courses with no strings attached. Imagine online textbooks without a hefty fee--or weight! Welcome to the wide-open world of open source software (OSS). "Wikipedia" defines OSS as computer software freely provided that "permits users to use, change, and improve the software, and to redistribute it in modified or unmodified forms. It is very often developed in a public, collaborative manner." For every commercially available product, there are open source alternatives developed by enterprising individuals. What's the draw? Commercial products are limited by the research and development that one company can provide. Open source solutions, on the other hand, have devoted communities of users who provide improvements and solutions to problems with programs. The variety of tools available may be surprising. This article provides a quick tour of some of these OSS products. (Contains 5 figures, 5 resources and 11 online resources.)
