Information Literacy: An Online Course for Student Library Assistants
Lincoln, Margaret
School Library Media Activities Monthly, v25 n10 p29-30 Jun 2009
As technology advances continue to impact K-12 schools, online education options offer alternative choices for both teaching and learning. Library media specialists, long committed to providing physical and intellectual access to instructional materials, have responded to changing needs in this online world. They had previously created a virtual presence through a fixed library Web site and now have incorporated such Web 2.0 features as blogs and wikis into the library's online space. In seeking to further define their role in the new realm of virtual learning, library media specialists have assumed a vital role in the development of online courses. A hybrid online course was piloted in 2007-2008, at Lakeview High School in Battle Creek, Michigan, where the author serves as library media specialist. The course was developed in response to a newly mandated Michigan Department of Education online learning graduation requirement. Blackboard Learning Management System was utilized for instruction, and the curricular focus was information literacy. Students participating in the course were in the 11th and 12th grades. They gained real world library work experience and also fulfilled traditional tasks performed by library media assistants. This article is about the design, implementation, and dissemination of the Lakeview High School online course.
