Online Design Elements: Improving Student Success and Minimizing Instructor Load
Montalvo, Gregory P.
Mid-Western Educational Researcher, v19 n1 p35-38 Win 2006
When the faculty of the Educational and Interdisciplinary Studies Department at Western Illinois University were asked to develop an online research methods course several years ago, the author was skeptical. How could anyone possibly teach the complexities of research over the internet? The author's face-to-face course focused on helping students become comfortable with the idea of asking and answering their own questions and helping them analyze research to write a mini-literature review. The activities the author developed for the course worked well face-to-face, but he was not sure how they would work in an online environment. In this paper, the author discusses the problems and issues of designing and developing an online research methods course. The author describes how he developed a quality, "Fully Integrated" online course and addresses the design elements being selected for the online course.
