The degree specification project is a simple, yet pragmatic process of crystallizing the "identity" of the degrees offered in each discipline. In other words, what should students expect to have in the way of skills, knowledge, and abilities once they complete a degree in a specific discipline? Faculty first articulate three to five degree-level outcomes that define the attributes of the degree. Then they identify targets and assessment tools for each outcome. Collected data are compared with targets, and then action plans--or warranted changes--are specified. This article presents the process points that encompass the basic ideas involved. It describes the assessment process of degree specification at the English department of a teaching university in southeastern Pennsylvania.
