Over the last 11 years, the Literacy Action Center, a traditional community-based adult literacy organization that focuses on educating English-speaking adults with low functioning literacy skills, has seen a transformation in the enthusiasm of the learners. The Literacy Action Center is also a learner-centered organization driven by the wants and needs of the enrollees, so group instruction is also delivered in specific content areas identified by the learners. The courses are taught by volunteers with content expertise. The program educates the experts on how to interact with the participants (e.g., interactive teaching methods, nonreader techniques) to deliver hands-on activities related to the subject matter. Since 1997, enrollees have been seen to actually engage in learning. While many changes have occurred during this time, the author shares one aspect--working with community groups and individual experts to deliver group courses. The author discusses how nontraditional volunteers share their expertise through small-group instruction.
