Using Student Work to Learn about Teaching
Cameron, Marilee; Loesing, Jenine; Rorvig, Vickie; Chval, Kathryn B.
Teaching Children Mathematics, v15 n8 p488-493 Apr 2009
Analyzing student work can help teachers improve the teaching and learning of mathematics. Fortunately, the four authors have experienced professional development that supports teachers' professional growth and provides tools to begin the challenge of analyzing student work. However, as they began to assume leadership roles in their schools and district, they recognized that other teachers had not had opportunities to learn how to examine student work to enhance teaching and learning. As a result of their own observations, the authors initiated a process for teachers in their schools to come together to look at student work. This article examines the professional development activities that the authors facilitated in their respective schools related to examining students' addition strategies in grades K-5 and the benefits resulting from the process.
