Blogging as a practice can be defined as different things to different people. There are those that keep personal online diaries to keep friends, family, and total strangers abreast of what's going on in their daily lives; news blogs that keep a daily or weekly digest of current events; politically oriented blogs that report daily events interspersed with sharp commentary and criticism; and "meta blogs" that comment on the ideas and discussions occurring elsewhere in the "blogosphere," a catch-all term for the social network that has emerged from Web publishing. There are also photoblogs, audio blogs, and videoblogs. However, the focus of many blogs falls somewhere in between a variety of formats. Most blogs allow a space for readers to leave comments about each item posted--sometimes leading to threads of dialogue as stimulating as the original item of discussion. This article talks about blogging. The author describes how anyone with an interest in professional community and social networking building may benefit from blogging as a social practice.
