Jon Levisohn's perceptive study of the Fox, Scheffler, and Marom "Visions of Jewish Education" volume manages both to pay tribute to the book's enormous contribution and to raise a number of serious intellectual issues that call for further reflection and analysis. His clear writing and educational insight are to be applauded. By raising questions such as those about the gender of the contributors and by reflecting upon the implications of having a book of philosophy written in large part by academic historians, Levisohn raises a number of concerns worthy of discussion. In this article, the author focuses on two issues that do not appear in Levisohn's paper. The first issue deals with the problem of the purity of vision. How the question of purity may be addressed is one important arena of further exploration. The second issue the author wishes to raise also emanates from the notion of purity. Namely, is it possible that too much vision is a bad thing? One of the dangers of a vision-driven institution is a kind of authoritarian possibility--even if it is done in the most benign way.
