Practical Implications for Student Affairs Professionals' Work in Facilitating Students' Inner Development

In the past ten years, a growing body of research has been devoted to examining the role of spirituality in the lives of college students. Recognizing the importance of distinguishing between religion and spirituality, some have characterized spirituality in terms of students' journey or quest in search of their own answers to the "big questions"--those that deal with identity, destiny or calling, faith, wholeness, and mattering. However, student affairs practitioners are still grappling with how to engage students in discussions about these questions in ways that promote students' inner development, while consciously recognizing the variability of both students' and student affairs practitioners' spiritual and religious practices and beliefs. This chapter discusses ways student affairs practitioners can aid students on the journey to asking and answering life's big questions. The suggestions are based on a study that compares student affairs practitioners' sense of life purpose and spiritual well-being relative to their engagement in practices associated with students' inner development.
