Give Your Technology Program a Little "Class"!
Vengersammy, Ormilla
Computers in Libraries, v29 n3 p14-18 Mar 2009
The Orange County Library System (OCLS) began to offer basic technology classes in July 2000. The computers were funded through a grant awarded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Over time, the library staff noticed that the demand for the classes increased, so the offering of classes also increased. When the author arrived at OCLS, her main focus was to enhance the training program and to centralize the creation of computer classes. With her experience in corporate training in classroom delivery and curriculum development, she found the library's training program was not conducted in a systematic, structured way. Staff members at each branch created their own classes and handouts specifically for their individual locations, and this information was not shared among the other branches. In this article, the author describes how she centralized the creation of classes in OCLS and enhanced its training program. She also provides tips on how other libraries can improve their technology programs.
