In this article, the author shares how she follows the policy developed by the Library Advisory Council (LAC) when she acquires new books for her school library. LAC is a group of fifty or so teaching librarians from all five New York City boroughs. They meet four times a year to help the Office of School Library Services focus on issues important to site-based school library media specialists (SLMSs). The author relates that adhering to LAC's pre-established guidelines makes selection decisions easier by countering her subjectivity and requiring that she takes an honest look at her reasons for picking certain items. Following the guidelines also means that if a resource is challenged, she can refer to the policy to justify her selection and can expect the support of both the school's advisory committee and the districtwide council.
