Not Just a Number Anymore
Henderson, Nancy
Exceptional Parent, v38 n12 p48-49 Dec 2008
In the Essex, Cincinnati retirement center where they both worked as nurses, Holly Doherty and Michele Schavoir often heard aides complain about one longtime resident in particular. The patient kicks and screams and nurses can not stand to be around her. After a year of playing detective, Doherty found a number of the patient's relatives in California. It was then that she learned why the woman acted the way she did. The patient was brutally raped in her 20s and was never able to be touched. That incident was not the first time the two nurses had been discouraged by a system that seemed to strip people of their human identities and label them as numbers. This article describes the efforts initiated by Doherty and Schavoir in developing a system that will help caregivers have a background of patients who can not express their own needs. Doherty's and Schavoir's efforts resulted into a system known as Future Health Strategies.
