In late 2005, individuals from across the country traveled to attend the national Office of Special Education Conference on Early Childhood in Washington, DC. Connected by networking at the conference, a group of parents with children with special needs left committed to collaboratively formulate a plan to create a family-centered and family-directed group that would unite early intervention parent leaders throughout the country. In less than one year, that plan was realized and the Early Intervention Family Alliance (EIFA) was created. It is the hope of the founding members that the actions of the EIFA will lead to improved outcomes for infants and toddlers with disabilities and their families by working to assure meaningful family involvement in the development of policies that affect the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) Part C and the implementation at community, state, and federal levels. This article describes the guiding principles adopted by EIFA and its accomplishments.
