The Challenge of Collaboration: Organizational Structure and Professional Identity
Koester, Jolene; Hellenbrand, Harry; Piper, Terry D.
About Campus, v13 n5 p12-19 Nov-Dec 2008
In 2003, the California State University, Northridge (CSUN) undertook the challenge of becoming a learning-centered institution. In a 2005 article, the authors discussed how the learning-centered model at CSUN has renewed its previous, scattered efforts at student retention. In this article, the authors describe the transformation that occurred at CSUN, including: (1) How they created a unified vision that binds this initiative with other important activities like the university's planning efforts and upcoming reaccreditation; (2) How they increased cross-divisional collaboration that is critical to the success of the effort; (3) How they used evidence in assessing progress and as the basis for moving forward; (4) How they transformed the campus culture; and (5) How they faced the challenges of campus leadership to ensure that the university continues to focus on the goal of being more learning-centered while remaining attentive to other internal and external demands.
