The Future Community College
Elsner, Paul A.
Community College Journal, v73 n5 p56-61 Apr-May 2003
Community colleges have encountered many factors that may reshape their future. Environmental imperatives weigh heavily on community colleges, as does the new integration of the sciences, such as breakthroughs in the biochemical sciences, such as the human genome project. It is also important to pay attention to the forms in which knowledge is transmitted, from the modularization of content to the growing impetus of e-learning and distance delivery. These factors appear to be the major forces that will recast and redefine community college roles in the near and longer term future, although it is impossible to project all the implications of new knowledge. In this article, the author talks about the future community college and examines some factors that will change the face of the institution. He suggests considerations for profiling and laying the foundation for the future.
