Relationship-Based Infant Care: Responsive, on Demand, and Predictable
Petersen, Sandra; Wittmer, Donna
Young Children, v63 n3 p40-42 May 2008
Young babies are easily overwhelmed by the pain of hunger or gas. However, when an infant's day is filled with caregiving experiences characterized by quick responses to his cries and accurate interpretations of the meaning of his communication, the baby learns that he can count on being fed and comforted. He begins to develop trust in his teacher and himself. Routines help babies recognize daily processes as predictable sequences. Through responsive, predictable, on-demand caregiving, babies begin to establish a sense of security. The authors discuss feeding, diapering, and napping.
