Pathways of Hope for the Students Left Behind: The Sagas of Two Students
DuBeau, Tania; Emenheiser, David E.; Stortz, Barbara Ann
Reclaiming Children and Youth: The Journal of Strength-based Interventions, v12 n2 p71-75 Sum 2003
The Pathways Schools-Anne Arundel serves adolescents with emotional disabilities using a one-to-one, community-based model. The instructional, behavioral, and vocational support is provided by paraprofessionals under the direction of certified special education teachers and licensed social workers. Students participate in the lessons and activities using the local community settings and resources, as well as a self-contained school site. This article describes the structure, philosophy, and approach of this unique school model through illustrative case studies of two students. This program is successful because of its flexibility in response to student behaviors and its collaborative relationships with stakeholders, especially the referring Local Education Agency (LEA) and parents.
