New Conversations: Student-Led Conferences
Shulkind, Sarah Brody
Principal Leadership, v9 n1 p54-58 Sep 2008
During the past three years, the author's administrative team at Milken Community High School in Los Angeles, a 7-12 school where the author is the middle school principal, has been discussing assessment. They decided that they wanted assessment to tell students what they did or did not do and enable them to self-adjust. To accomplish this, the author and her team implemented student-led conferences. Student-led conferences at Milken are based on mid-year narrative assessments in which teachers describe recommendations and commendations for their students. Advisers placed these narratives in the academic oversight folders they maintained throughout the year. In this article, the author describes how they prepare students, teachers, and parents for student-led conferences. She also presents the feedback from parents, teachers, and students on student-led conferences.
