Voiced and Unvoiced Concerns of Mothers: Psychodynamic Principles Address the Challenges of Early Parenthood
Hoffman, Leon; Nachman, Patricia; Rosenman, Alice
Zero to Three, v26 n5 p45-51 May 2006
New mothers recognize that motherhood is a special task in their lives and realize that input from others provides assistance on behalf of their babies and toddlers. The Pacella Parent Child Center of the New York Psychoanalytic Institute and Society is a community of mothers and babies/toddlers where the staff helps mothers address the challenges of motherhood. The Center utilizes psychoanalytic/developmental principles to help mothers address their voiced and unvoiced concerns in order to help them locate the best parenting tools within themselves and allow themselves to experience joy in their child rearing. A variety of principles and techniques are enumerated in the paper. Clinical vignettes are used as illustrations.
