Images and Influences in the Promotion of Physical Activity
Overdorf, Virginia
Quest, v57 n2 p243-254 May 2005
This article presents the author's presentation on the 13th Delphine Hanna Commemorative Lecture in 2004. The presentation examines some of the problems and issues that must be addressed in order to promote physical activity in the academy and beyond. While there is no all embracing prescription, the author hopes to offer some suggestions that might enable teachers to move the profession in physical education into a Golden Age of Physical Activity. While educators as professionals have always intuitively known the importance of physical activity in a person's life, there is more substantive information available for this axiom today than perhaps at any time in the past. The benefits of regular exercise on physical health and mental well-being have been well documented. There is convincing evidence that regular physical activity reduces the risk of several potentially life-threatening, chronic, physical conditions, including coronary heart disease, hypertension, osteoporosis, adult onset diabetes, and obesity. The question, then, is this: How can members of the academy parlay this knowledge into life-changing programs for all members of the society? Here, the author discusses images and influences in the promotion of physical activity and addresses two key curricular considerations in promoting physical activity. The first factor would include examination of the curriculum in the professional education programs. A second emphasis is to assess course offerings for non-majors campuswide.
