Challenges and Opportunities in Experiential Learning
Cooksy, Leslie J.
American Journal of Evaluation, v29 n3 p340-342 2008
Ethical challenges occur even in the relatively protected context of an evaluation project conducted by students under the guidance of their instructor. Successfully building an evaluation project into a semester-long course is not easy. Practical challenges include identifying an appropriate evaluand, completing the evaluation within the allotted time, and managing student teams. Morris (1992) wrote that a successful evaluation project for a single-semester course is (a) client driven, so that program staff are motivated to interact with the students; (b) small scale and organized around strict deadlines, so that the project is feasible within the limited timeframe; and (c) campus based. This article presents a scenario titled "Challenges and Issues in Experiential Learning," which described a student evaluation with the characteristics that Morris recommends.
