To Get Good Fund Raisers, a University Goes to Great Lengths
Blumenstyk, Goldie
Chronicle of Higher Education, v54 n45 pA14 Jul 2008
As vice chancellor for advancement at the University of California at Irvine, Thomas J. Mitchell is running two campaigns: one to raise $1-billion for the university, and the other to attract and keep the people whose job it is to raise that money. Since joining Irvine six years ago from Iowa State University, Mitchell has deployed a range of tactics--many of them common in business and sales but less conventional in the world of university advancement--to build and keep a fund-raising team that works together and hits its goals month after month. This article describes the tactics employed by University of California at Irvine to increase fund raising.
