Thrills and Chills at Tenure-Track Park
Malisheski, Laura S.
Chronicle of Higher Education, v54 n45 pB32 Jul 2008
If one has set his or her sights on landing a tenure-track position and has endured (or expects to endure) all the uncertainty, angst, and serendipity of the academic marketplace, surely the worst fear is that there will not be any offers. Candidates worry that they will need to rely on Plan B for another year as they recover from the job-search roller coaster and bolster their teaching and research in preparation for another go-round on the academic tilt-a-whirl. What could be worse? How about receiving a job offer and realizing that something about the opportunity is not quite right? Should one accept the position and make the best of the situation? Or is the problem distressing enough that taking the job might derail one's academic career or severely affect one's personal life? Being aware of red flags to watch out for can help one navigate the job market without losing his or her way. This article presents several tips for dealing with these red flags.
