Colleges Need to Offer Clear Paths to Leadership
Davis, Erroll B., Jr.
Chronicle of Higher Education, v54 n45 pA64 Jul 2008
In this article, the author shares some of the lessons about leadership he learned when he became chancellor of the University of Georgia in 2006. He realized that the route to leadership in the private sector differs significantly from the route in higher education. The path to leadership in the academe is not only poorly marked, but it does not exist. Tenured professors are thrust into leadership positions who are often unable to work in teams. The author suggests that trustees of higher education institutions should examine what processes are in place to hire and nurture presidents who understand how to instill leadership throughout the institution. He also suggests that one way to advance higher educational goals is to borrow from the corporate world some of the ways that they have trained their leaders in the art of leading.
