The author discusses changes that the Texas Division for Blind Services made in its vocational rehabilitation program to increase competitive employment opportunities for vocational rehabilitation consumers who are blind and visually impaired. P. R. Warren, B. S. Cavenaugh, and M. J. Giesen (2004) reported that, nationwide, a higher proportion of blind and visually impaired consumers had homemaker closures (43% in fiscal year 2001) than had consumers with other disabilities (2% in fiscal year 2001). The author summarizes the strategies of the new training approach, employment lifestyle training, which combines teaching daily living skills and job readiness skills in an employment-related context. He (a) concludes that the strength of the program is in building consumers' expectations that competitive employment is possible but (b) points out the need for further research to determine the effectiveness of the new approach.
