Faith in School Leadership: Conceptualising the Distinctiveness and Inclusiveness of Church School Headship
Luckcock, Tim
Management in Education, v21 n2 p15-20 2007
Conceptualising the "distinctiveness" of school leadership in the faith school sector is important because the reconstruction of headship in recent years has been largely determined by secular agencies such as the National College for School Leadership without special reference to the needs of particular faith communities. Although limited to exploring a Christian understanding of school leadership, this article is ecumenical in spirit, inviting interfaith dialogue about the nature of school leadership from different spiritual perspectives. The author develops a model of spiritual leadership to correlate four elements of distinctiveness and inclusiveness. These elements include: (1) Three leadership styles recommended to heads by the church in a key strategic report; (2) Background theory of church leadership as ministry in three dimensions; (3) Three realms of organisational reality in the philosophy of leadership; and (4) Six key areas that currently inform the professional norms of school leadership in the UK.
