Collaboration Is Key to Leadership
Thomas, Nancy
Journal of Special Education Leadership, v20 n1 p44-45 Mar 2007
Leadership in schools matters today more than ever, since school leaders are faced with leading schools through an era of profound social change that has required fundamental rethinking of what schools do and how they do it. The challenges facing educational leadership have grown tremendously in recent years because of increased public expectations of the schools due to legislation and demographic factors (e.g., expanding diversity in population). Leadership is shared among school board members, superintendents, principals, special education directors, state departments of education, and institutions of higher education. Recruiting, preparing, and supporting talented, knowledgeable and dedicated people to serve in roles of leadership in school is an increasing challenge that is being tackled in a variety of ways throughout the country. To address these challenges, the author discusses the significance of collective and collaborative efforts among special education leaders at the state and national levels to better meet the challenges they faced.
