Supporting Infant Teachers in Their Care of Fussy Babies
Jurie, Cindy; Baker, Marsha
Exchange: The Early Childhood Leaders' Magazine Since 1978, n182 p68-72 Jul-Aug 2008
Child care teachers cope with juggling multiple competing demands: (1) managing relationships with parents; (2) coping with individual infant temperaments; and (3) meeting the group needs of the other infants in their care. Infant teachers often play a unique role in that they may be the first adults to listen and understand what the experience of having a fussy baby has been like for the parent as they encounter similar issues with the baby in their classroom. Infant caregivers can provide the non-judgmental empathy and support that a parent needs. In 2005, a grant from the Prince Charitable Trusts enabled the Fussy Baby Network, Erikson Institute's first clinical program, to expand services to support infant teachers working with fussy babies in child care. In this article, the authors present shared wisdom from experienced infant teachers as to what may help when facing a fussy baby in child care.
