This article describes a project to improve the health and quality of life of minority ethnic communities in the West Midlands. The project demonstrates the difference adult learning can make to agendas such as health and community cohesion. "Tandrusti" is a Punjabi word meaning a sound condition of the body or mind. It's also the name of a unique project that is using a community-education approach to promote the benefits of physical activity and healthy living to members of black and minority ethnic communities in Dudley. Aside from improving people's quality of life, the project has had other demonstrable positive impacts, fostering greater interaction between people of different cultural and religious backgrounds, promoting individuals' independence and prompting people to become more involved in training and volunteering activities. Learners have been developing their English language skills through the project's embedded basic skills work, and gained in confidence, making appointments with medical professionals and accessing health services unaided.
