Finding a Teaching Position: Strategies for Success
Kersten, Thomas A.
Education Digest: Essential Readings Condensed for Quick Review, v73 n7 p38-42 Mar 2008
Whether nearing the completion of a teacher education program, already teaching and considering changing school districts, or relocating, teachers share a common interest--finding a teaching position. At first, the prospect may appear somewhat overwhelming. They may wonder whether sufficient positions are available or whether certain grade levels or subject areas offer more opportunities. They may have heard that their local teaching market is tight, but that teaching opportunities abound elsewhere. This article offers some important strategies in optimizing their chances of landing a new teaching position: (1) Increase your teaching endorsements; (2) Look for opportunities to expand your teaching-related experiences; (3) Build a strong professional and personal reputation; (4) Maximize your networking opportunities; (5) Begin your employment search early; and (6) Be flexible.
