Not Just "YourSpace": Educators Urged to Be Careful on the Internet
Barrett, Laura
Education Digest: Essential Readings Condensed for Quick Review, v73 n2 p9-11 Oct 2007
The Internet can be a tremendous aid to research, information sharing, and social networking, but it also raises Murphy's Law to new heights: If anything can go wrong online, it will. And when it goes wrong, educators' jobs and reputations are sometimes at risk. For example, there is the former student teacher in Pennsylvania who filed a federal lawsuit claiming she was unfairly denied a diploma--and a chance to teach--because her MySpace page featured a photo of her wearing a pirate hat and drinking something out of a cup, with the caption "Drunken Pirate." This article describes how a teacher's use of MySpace and other social networking sites, e-mail, blogs, and other opinion venues and instant messaging could hurt their chances of employment. Increasingly, employers are checking out applicants' online personae as part of the hiring process. An advisory provided by Massachusetts Teachers Association (MTA) on cyberspace safety is presented.
