The Philanthropic Recommendation Research Report: Group Project for Engl317, Writing for Business and Industry
Mahin, Linda
Business Communication Quarterly, v70 n3 p309-320 2007
English 317 is a second writing course designed for business majors primarily but available to all students who need to fulfill the second writing course requirement. The purpose of the philanthropic research recommendation report is to familiarize students with the ways that corporations envision and enact social responsibility as depicted on their Web pages. Seen against the background of such corporate practices as job outsourcing, environmental damage, and financial wrongdoing, corporate commitment to citizenship helps to round out student appreciation for the complexities of corporate accountability. In this article, the author describes how the students conduct their research and write their reports. An outline of the research assignment parts and the format of the finished report are presented. In addition, the author provides a summary of the benefits of strategic philanthropy, a proposal form letter/memo, samples of summaries of corporate philanthropic projects, as well as books and other resources on corporate philanthropy.
