Service Learning on Campus
Judge, Therese M.
Business Communication Quarterly, v69 n2 p189-192 2006
One of the challenges with advanced writing courses, such as business writing, is developing assignments and projects that approximate writing in the workplace. Many instructors and learning theorists believe that giving students authentic writing practice is the best preparation for the writing they will do in their chosen careers. The author suggests to look "on campus" for service-learning opportunities. In this article, the author describes how campus service-learning opportunities become a welcome and viable option for advanced writing course projects. She discusses one of the experiences she has had with an on-campus, service-learning assignment that meets the objectives of her Technical Writing course.
