The Actors behind the Curtain: Representation of Women Faculty in Community College Institutional Decision Making
Lester, Jaime; Lukas, Scott
New Directions for Community Colleges, n142 p57-68 Sum 2008
The purpose of this study is to further the examination of involvement, perceptions, and experiences of faculty in shared governance, with an emphasis on the differences between men and women. Moreover, this study seeks to understand potential gender disparities in the experience of women faculty while involved in shared governance, with a focus on harassment, discrimination, and involvement. The study is guided by the following research questions: (1) Do gender differences exist in the level of involvement in faculty governance?; (2) Do the perceptions of the governance process, the power of faculty governance, and the role of faculty in campus governance vary by gender?; and (3) Do male and female community college faculty experience differing levels of discrimination during involvement in faculty governance? The authors discuss and describe faculty governance structures within community colleges, with an emphasis on California, the site for this study. They conclude with results and recommendations for practice.
