This article explores the impact of parental involvement on student psychosocial development. High levels of parental involvement in the lives of today's college students and increased contact and communication between today's college students and their parents has caused concern for some in higher education. Among the concerns is the potential for adverse impact on students' development. However, parental involvement is not necessarily detrimental to students' development and may in fact be supportive of development in some areas. As always, a delicate balance of challenge and support is the best formula for promoting student development. Student affairs professionals can help by finding ways to educate parents about how best to support students without oversupporting them. The article concludes by presenting some ideas to keep in mind for coaching parents.
