The Effect of Weight on Self-Concept, and Psychosocial Correlates of Physical Activity in Youths
Welk, Gregory J.; Joens-Matre, Roxane
Journal of Physical Education, Recreation & Dance (JOPERD), v78 n8 p43-46 Oct 2007
Much more attention has been given to the health implications of overweight and obesity than to the psychosocial implications. In order to combat obesity effectively, it is important to understand the implications of overweight on self-concept, self-esteem, and physical activity levels. Youth obesity has been associated with negative psychosocial conditions, such as alienation and isolation, which can lead to depression and other negative health outcomes. Also, body consciousness can become a barrier to physical activity in overweight youths. This article presents an overview of research based on the "Physical Self-Perception Profile" and suggests how the information can be used to help overweight youths to improve their self-concept and increase their interest and involvement in physical activity.
