National Distribution of Physical and Occupational Therapists Serving Children with Disabilities in Educational Environments
Effgen, Susan K.; Myers, Christine Teeters; Myers, Doug
Physical Disabilities: Education and Related Services, v26 n1 p47-61 Fall 2007
Each year, the United States Department of Education collects data on the number of children with disabilities and the number of service providers meeting their needs in the educational system. The purpose of this investigation was to reanalyze the U.S. Department of Education data to determine state and regional ratios of physical therapists and occupational therapists to children with disabilities frequently served by therapists. Results demonstrated large regional variability possibly due to differences in service delivery or data collection. The impact of this reported data on funding, workloads, interpretation of research, and personnel issues is discussed. (Contains 2 tables and 2 figures.)
