Learning Research: Insights from Head Start

Conducting research is an ever evolving process of deepening one's understanding of multiple research concepts and issues. In the research on Head Start that this author and her colleagues conducted under the tutelage of Dr Sally Lubeck, their research team increased their knowledge and experience of research while developing a contextualized picture of four Head Start programs. Lubeck guided them in being "creators of a space" where they might think anew about how they came to know, the frames through which they considered the data, and how they represented the programs and people to others. In this article, the author shares glimpses into her journey of learning to do research in Head Start and, in so doing, she will attempt to convey some of Lubeck's thinking and approach to this research and provide insights into issues confronting others who are learning qualitative research. The author begins with a brief overview of their Head Start study before describing how they came to know about Head Start and how they confronted issues of representation. The author concludes with a few comments on the direction in which Lubeck's Head Start research was moving--a direction that continued to increase the space where those directly involved could act and speak on their own behalf.
