Many teachers believe that their administrators have lost touch with life in the classroom, and the resulting gap is a serious concern. Closing a perception gap between principals and teachers is critical if they are to work together for their mutual benefit and that of the children they serve. The authors of this article asked a group of veteran, mid-career, and novice teachers to reflect on the perceived gap between principals and teachers. All respondents acknowledged that a perception gap existed to some extent at their schools, and many felt that this gap profoundly impacted the working environment by creating a sense of isolation among the faculty. This article discusses: (1) why the gap occurs; (2) how perceptions of the gap affects school climate and the relationship between faculty and administration; and (3) what principals and teachers can do to help close the gap.
