Taking on the Real World: Helping the Teenager with Asperger Syndrome Prepare for the Transition from High School to the Adult World
Hurlbutt, Karen S.
Exceptional Parent, v38 n4 p33-35 Apr 2008
As more and more children are being diagnosed with Asperger syndrome (AS), more parents are wondering what the future will be like for their child. Because of the challenges faced by youth with AS, it is important for parents and teachers to work together to guide high school students with AS through a successful transition to the adult world. Difficulties in the areas of social skills, language/social communication, areas of passion, and structure/routine pose challenges for individuals with AS at school and in the adult world. Parents can do things at home with their child, however, starting at a young age, to work toward a smooth transition. In this article, the author discusses how to help teenagers with AS prepare for their transition from high school to the adult world.
