Career Preparation for Doctoral Students: The University of Kansas History Department
Levin, Eve
New Directions for Teaching and Learning, n113 p83-97 Spr 2008
Under the auspices of the Carnegie Initiative on the Doctorate (CID), the Department of History at the University of Kansas recast its doctoral program to emphasize career preparation. Its creative approach has earned the department national visibility. In this article, the author describes how the department came to reenvision graduate education, how they managed the process of change, and what innovations they instituted to launch their students into the profession as capable "stewards of their discipline," to use CID language. As cochair of the department's CID committee and its director of graduate studies, the author participated in the development and implementation of the redesigned program.
